Whats In The Photo:

Landsat-7 Enhanced Thematic Mapper (ETM) satellite image from August 4, 2004, showing the Jonah natural gas field. Graded well pads and connecting access roads are clearly visible. Each pad covers an area of 3-4 acres. Open pits of waste drilling fluids appear as blue spots on many of the pads. Bright green coloration of many of the pads and roads in the field indicate that grass or other vegetation has recently been planted and some form of reclamation is being attempted. Area shown is about 7 miles across. At least 500 well pads have been installed; BLM has just released plans to allow the installation of over 3,000 additional well pads in this area. Note that drilling has now spread well beyond the area shown in this image, to the east, northeast and southwest.

Each pad covers an area of 3-4 acres. Open pits of waste drilling fluids appear as blue spots on many of the pads. Bright green coloration of many of the pads and roads in the field indicate that grass or other vegetation has been planted and some form of reclamation is being attempted. Area shown is about 7 miles across. At least 600 well pads have been installed; BLM is still evaluating the potential impacts from the proposed installation of over 3,000 additional well pads in this area. Note that drilling has now spread well beyond the area shown in this image, to the east, northeast and southwest, effectively merging the Jonah field and the Pinedale Anticline field to the north.

This aerial photograph shows the vast network of roads and well pads that make up a portion of the Jonah natural gas field, located in Wyomings Upper Green River basin, 35 miles south of the town of Pinedale. This recently drilled gas field is NOT coal bed methane, but shows similar high density drilling (in this case its for gas in a tight sands reservoir).
