Whats In The Photo:Aerial view showing typical drilling activity in the Pinedale Anticline natural gas field of Wyoming. A 3-4 acre flat graded area, or "well pad," hosts a working drill rig and an assortment of vehicles, equipment trailers, and mobile processing facilities. Drilling fluids (reddish-brown) are being expelled into open pits.

Whats In The Photo:Landsat satellite image from 1999, showing the Jonah natural gas field. Graded well pads and connecting access roads are clearly visible. Each pad covers an area of 3-4 acres. Open pits of waste drilling fluids appear as blue spots on many of the pads. Area shown is about 7 miles across.

Open pits of waste drilling fluids appear as blue spots on many of the pads. Area shown is about 7 miles across. By early 2003, nearly 500 well pads have been installed. BLM is currently (summer 2003) considering an industry request to add at least 800 new pads to the field.

Whats In The Photo:This aerial photograph shows the vast network of roads and well pads that make up a portion of the Jonah natural gas field, located in Wyoming's Upper Green River basin, 35 miles south of the town of Pinedale. This recently drilled gas field is NOT coal bed methane, but shows similar high density drilling (in this case it's for gas in a "tight sands" reservoir).

Whats In The Photo:Oblique aerial shot of experimental drilling in Jonah Field at 5 to 10-acre spacing, which will occur over much of the 30,000 acre field if BLM approves the addition of up to 3100 new wells. For this experiment, portable mats are being placed on the ground in hopes that this will reduce the surface disturbance.
