Photographs showing a frozen waterfall of waste drilling fluids, one of several spills that occurred between November 2007 and February 2008 from natural gas drilling sites in the Piceance Basin of western Colorado (near the town of Rifle and the Roan Plateau). Photos apparently taken by the Colorado Department of Natural Resources during field investigation on February 20, 2008. See the DNR's 3/6/08 press release on this event at http://dnr.state.co.us/newsapp/press.asp?pressid=4783 . See also http://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/3/19/2301/62661/623/480436 for more information. UPDATE 3/25/08: Close comparison of the photos taken by DNR field staff on February 20 with the two aerial shots on March 19 suggests two different locations in the same general vicinity near the head of Garden Gulch. If so, it's possible that the March 20 photos reveal another large spill. These areas are on private land with limited access.
